Firm Lamb Supply at Wagga

AUSTRALIA - Lamb consignments at Wagga were firm week-on-week, at 30,000 head, with very good quality trade and heavy weight lambs penned, report market analysts at Meat and Livestock Australia.

Well-conditioned trade weight lambs were in strong demand from processors, while plainer lambs lacking finish sold to a weaker trend.

Light weight 2 score lambs were back 50¢ on 546¢, while 3 score trade weight lambs eased 10¢ and averaged 525¢/kg cwt. Heavy weight 3 score lambs were 16¢ lower on 515¢, and extra heavy 4 score lambs lifted 7¢ on 508¢/kg cwt.

Sheep numbers increased 43 per cent, at 10,000 head, and overall competition was weaker as not all buyers operated fully. Heavy weight sheep were well supplied. Heavy weight 3 score Merino ewes declined 14¢ and averaged 367¢/kg cwt, while heavy weigh 3 score Merino wethers were up 8¢ on 402¢/kg cwt.

At the close of Thursday’s markets, the eastern states restocker lamb indicator increased 4¢ on 522¢/kg cwt. Merino lambs were back 10¢ on 450¢, while light lambs were 3¢ lower on 492¢/kg cwt. Trade lambs eased 2¢ on 516¢, and heavy lambs remained firm on 515¢/kg cwt. The mutton indicator slipped 5¢ and finished on 349¢/kg cwt.
