Sheep in Transport Detained over FMD Fears

03 September 2014

RUSSIA - Russian authorities have stopped a truck transporting 185 sheep because the animals did not have veterinary certificates showing there they came from and their health status.

The sheep that were stopped at a traffic police checkpoint near the town of Luchegorsk in the Primorsky territory had been transported from the Trans-Baikal Region to the Spassky district of Primorye.

The lack of certificates for the sheep raised concerns over the possible threat of disease including foot and mouth disease.

Last year, outbreaks of the disease were recorded in the Trans-Baikal region, and in the Amur region, through which the sheep had been transported.

This year, a major outbreak of foot and mouth disease was detected in the Spassky district of Primorye, where the flock of sheep was being sent.

The FMD outbreak in Primorye saw more than 20,000 pigs slaughtered, accounting for a fifth of the pigs in the region.

The veterinary authorities in the region have charged and fined the owner of the sheep for breaking the biosecurity regulations.

On detection in Primorye fact consignments of sheep without veterinary documents from the territory of Trans-Baikal Territory
