New Zealand Sheep Industry in Contraction

25 September 2015

NEW ZEALAND – New Zealand’s sheep flock has shrunk to 28.6 million, a drop of 4.1 per cent on the previous year.

This included smaller hogget and breeding ewe numbers, down 2.6 and 4.5 per cent respectively, says Beef and Lamb New Zealand’s recent outlook for 2015/16, which blames tight feed conditions and "weak prices".

Lamb slaughter is forecast to fall 7.4 per cent to 19.4 million head.

However, lamb price is four per cent higher than last year at 547 cents per kilo at an exchange rate of $0.63, the report added.

South Island sheep numbers fell the most, back 6.3 per cent to 14.5 million, with the North Island reporting a 1.8 per cent fall 14.1 million.
