Foot Rot Strikes Again in Norway

16 July 2015

NORWAY – Disappointed veterinarians have found another case of “highly virulent foot rot” in a Norwegian flock after thinking they had beaten the condition.

The Norwegian Food Safety Authority (FSA) said it believed Norway had “crossed the finish line” before the “setback” was confirmed in Rogaland, southern Norway, earlier this month.

Arvid Reiersen, FSA special inspector, noted the level of resources used to combat foot rot since its discovery in Norway in 2008.

Cases declined gradually from 19 in 2010 to one in 2014. Last year only one operation had foot rot restrictions in the country.

Sheep across the county are assessed, with foot-trimming, foot-bathing and slaughtering carried out where necessary, the FSA added.
