Australian Goat Slaughter Continues to Rise

20 May 2015

AUSTRALIA - Australian goat slaughter during March rose by 50 per cent year-on-year, with 220,021 head processed according to the Australia Bureau of Statistics.

Meat and Livestock Australia said that subsequently, overall goat meat production increased by 44 per cent year-on-year, to 3,267 tonnes cwt.

The increased slaughter was attributed to all eastern states, as record over-the-hook prices provided incentive.

March processing more than doubled year-on-year in South Australia, lifting to 44,412 head, while Victoria increased 61 per cent, to 80,892 head.

Queensland and New South Wales were 29 per cent and 12 per cent higher year-on-year, at 84,865 head and 9,562 head, respectively.

Western Australia slaughter fell by 56 per cent year-on-year, to 265 head.

Production in Victoria increased by 59 per cent, to 1,140 tonnes cwt as did levels in Queensland, up 29 per cent, to 1,382 tonnes cwt.

Despite slaughter lifting in New South Wales, production slipped by 11 per cent, to 130 tonnes cwt, while South Australia correlated with slaughter, and production rose 94 per cent, to 612 tonnes cwt.

Western Australia saw production fall relative to slaughter, down 60 per cent, to 4 tonnes cwt.
